CompactLogix 1769-L23 Migration Recommendations

The CompactLogix 1769-L23 controller series has been discontinued and many industrial facilities are now upgrading to newer CompactLogix controller platforms to improve performance, communications capability, software compatibility, and long term system support.

Recommended migration paths for 1769-L23 controller systems depend on communication requirements and existing application functionality.

Recommended Controller Replacements

For applications not requiring onboard RS232 ASCII communications:

  • 1769-L23E-QBFC1B → 1769-L24ER-QBFC1B
  • 1769-L23-QBFC1B → 1769-L24ER-QBFC1B
  • 1769-L23-QB1B → 1769-L24ER-QB1B

For applications requiring RS232 ASCII communications:

  • 1769-L23E-QBFC1B → 1769-L24ER-QBFC1B + 1769-ASCII module
  • 1769-L23-QBFC1B → 1769-L24ER-QBFC1B + 1769-ASCII module
  • 1769-L23-QB1B → 1769-L24ER-QB1B + 1769-ASCII module

Where RS232 Modbus communications are required, a ProSoft MVI69-MCM communication module may also be used as part of the migration solution.

Software Compatibility Recommendations

The CompactLogix L23 controller family was originally introduced with RSLogix 5000 Version 17 and supported through Version 20. Existing systems using RSLogix 5000 Version 20 can migrate directly to L24 controller platforms with native compatibility.

Systems operating on earlier RSLogix versions may require upgrading to:

  • RSLogix 5000 Version 20

or

  • Studio 5000 Logix Designer Version 21 or later

Migration Considerations

When upgrading CompactLogix L23 systems, important considerations may include:

  • Existing serial and Ethernet communications
  • ASCII or Modbus device compatibility
  • I/O expansion compatibility
