Micro830 Programmable Controllers
Micro830 Migration & Replacement Solutions
The Micro830 controller series (catalog numbers beginning with 2080-LC30) was officially discontinued on 31 December 2023. Customers using existing Micro830 systems are encouraged to migrate to newer Micro800 controller platforms that provide improved communications capability, expanded networking support, and ongoing hardware availability.
Recommended migration paths depend on machine size, I/O requirements, expansion module usage, and communication requirements.
Recommended Migration Paths
Micro820 Controller Systems
Recommended for smaller standalone machine applications originally using Micro830 10 point or 16 point controllers.
Key advantages include:
- Embedded 10/100 Ethernet communications
- Integrated microSD card support
- Compact standalone controller design
- Cost effective upgrade path
- Supports up to 20 local I/O points
- Supports up to 2 plug in modules
- Suitable for compact OEM machinery and standalone automation systems
Micro850 L50E Controller Systems
Recommended for larger systems using 24 point or 48 point Micro830 controllers or applications requiring advanced networking and motion control capability.
Key advantages include:
- Support for 2085 expansion I/O modules
- Embedded EtherNet/IP communications
- Dual Ethernet and serial communications
- Supports advanced motion control functionality
- High speed counter and Pulse Train Output support
- Supports up to 5 plug in modules
- Improved industrial networking capability
- Suitable for larger machine control and industrial automation systems
Migration Considerations
When upgrading Micro830 systems, several hardware and configuration changes may need to be reviewed including:
- Expansion I/O compatibility
- Plug in module slot requirements
- Serial communications and Modbus devices
- Ethernet network configuration
- Motion control and high speed counter requirements
- Panel space and terminal layout differences
- Controller programming and firmware compatibility
Software Migration
Micro830, Micro820, and Micro850 controller families all use Connected Components Workbench (CCW) software, helping simplify software conversion and migration projects.
Typical migration steps include:
- Backing up the existing CCW project
- Changing the controller profile to the new target controller
- Reviewing I/O and plug in module compatibility
- Updating communication settings and IP addressing
- Verifying ladder logic and user defined function blocks
- Downloading and commissioning the updated controller
Applications using multiple plug in modules or advanced serial communication devices may require additional hardware changes or communication module upgrades during migration.
PLC GEAR can assist with Micro830 migration planning, replacement controller selection, CCW software compatibility, communication upgrades, and sourcing of replacement automation hardware for industrial control systems.
